Realm Description

Nearer Basturingen is a small chiefdom on the side of the Marden river that is closer to the other barbarian clans, but composed of restless Basturings who ventured across the water from their heartlands.

Origins

In days long past, Bastur the Old begat Kulainn, who followed behind his father in the Great Wandering of his people. The journeys molded him into a shrewd and fierce warrior, ever eager for strife. When the wanderlust left Bastur and he finally planted his spear in the ground, he looked westward over the river from the heartlands, and there saw the raven spirit, harbinger of war. To Kulainn and his sons were given the lands on the west banks of the Marden river, a sword's edge to draw the blood of fellow Northmen who dare to approach the heartlands too closely. May they keep their watch over the Marden water for a thousand years!

Ethnography

Among the commoners, the nearer shore of Basturingen shares more in common with other barbarian tribes and bears less resemblance to the descendants of Bastur. The fire-gold hair and the pale skin of proper Basturings has given way to a range of darker hair shades and to ruddier skin complexions in the locals here. The accent of speech is less guttural and more nasally. Marriage customs are known to the people here, unlike Basturia proper, where the women are shared in common by the best warriors.
