Read a Journal Entry

Journals are player created messages about things in game. Most of the time these can be considered to be known things, as somethig your character heard via rumor, though they can also be flagged as out of character information that is really only meant for your enjoyment as a player rather than for use by your characters (unless they happen to know of it some other way.)

Chapter 11: The Interregnum Of 45-48

Written by Aldous Fletcher on 49-37-1 (June 11, 2026 21:47)

Following the execution of King Loghain I by the Asrians and the relief of the capital's siege by allied forces, his son, Maelric Eilean, was appointed Prince-Regent of the Kingdom in 45-34-2.

Though inexperienced in matters of governance, Maelric led the Caorrani people through the remainder of the war. Throughout his rule, he relied heavily upon the counsel of Duke Eoghan, who had previously ruled as King before his deposition during the Civil War, as well as Duke Avalon, whose Duchy encompassed nearly half of the Kingdom's territory.

As the Kingdom remained consumed by the war against the Asrian Invasion, the Prince-Regency of Maelric saw very few significant domestic reforms. King Loghain had been expected to preside over a Council of Lords that would establish the terms for the transition of Caorran into an Elective Monarchy, but his death and the war prevented these proceedings from taking place. Although the responsibility subsequently fell upon Maelric as Prince-Regent, the ongoing war and the demands of military leadership prevented him from convening the Council. As a result, the proposed succession reforms remained unimplemented throughout his Regentship.

Despite his popularity among the common people as the son of a celebrated Caorrani hero, Maelric failed to secure sufficient support among the noble Houses to be crowned King. Much of this opposition stemmed from his lack of administrative experience. Furthermore, while his army marched alongside those of Ascalon and Fairshore, it never engaged the enemy directly, as the Asrian forces had already been broken by the time it reached the front. Among some nobles and soldiers, this was regarded either as misfortune, for having been denied vengeance against the invaders that murdered his father, or as a sign of weakness, as Maelric had been unable to strike a decisive blow himself.

Finally, in 46-54-2, the war had came to an end. Still unable to gather the support necessary from the other Houses to properly press his claim, Maelric formally abdicated. Duke Avalon declined rulership when it was offered to him, and so General Alasdair the Ironwall was selected to serve as Regent of the Kingdom.

Under the Regency of Alasdair, the Kingdom entered a period of peace and reform. In 47-18-2, the Minimum Land Requirements for Subrealms Act was revised to establish formal requirements governing the promotion of Lordships and Viscounties. This was followed in 48-52-4 by the enactment of the Subordinate Realm Promotions Act, which required all subrealms to obtain prior authorization from the Crown before elevating their titles.

Following the passage of the Subordinate Realm Promotions Act, Alasdair reconvened the Council of Lords to determine the future structure of the Kingdom and settle the matter of succession. The Council met three years later than originally intended, as it had first been scheduled to convene after King Loghain's coronation.

Although initially intended to debate the laws and procedures of the proposed Elective Monarchy, the Council quickly became consumed by a more fundamental question: whether the Civil War itself had been lawful, and whether the changes it produced possessed any legitimacy.

After several days of deliberation, the Council concluded that the Civil War had indeed been unlawful and that its consequences were therefore null and void. From this determination emerged an unavoidable conclusion: King Eoghan II had never been lawfully deposed.

Consequently, in 48-53-5, as the Council reached their conclusion, Alasdair immediately relinquished his Regency and restored Duke Eoghan to the throne, proclaiming him once more King of the Caorrani people. Upon his return to power, King Eoghan II the Restored moved swiftly to overturn the constitutional changes proposed by the last Council, abolishing the planned elective succession. In 49-37-1, King Eoghan formally codified agnatic-cognatic primogeniture and re-established the absolute authority of the Crown by enacting two landmark Acts.

While the Prince-Regency of Maelric had been defined by war and uncertainty, the Regency of Alasdair became known for peace, reform, and the restoration of the lawful Caorrani King.
