Avalon and his squire were joined on their travels by David, son of one of the elders of Maccrage, who rode on a tan horse and lead the way to their next destination.
Word of Sir Avalon's arrival had already reached the fortified village of Dugevis. The gate was closed and the elders were waiting for him, dressed in their finest clothes. The local people had gathered to watch.
Avalon smiled, dismounted and handed the reins of his horse to his squire.
"Greetings, good people of Dugevis. I am Sir Avalon of Hope, sent from His Grace the Duke, to take charge of this county. Here are my credentials."
He handed the letter to the elders, who each took their time and made great ceremony in examining it, before bowing and handing it back.
"I am Bertred, the chief eleder, welcome to Dugevis, my lord."
Bertred made a signal with his hand, and the gate was opened.
